GREENVILLE, Pa.-- The Thiel Players will present a modern, student-developed adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing April 17-18 and April 24-25 at 7 p.m. in the William A. Robinson Theater at Thiel College.

The production is a reimagined version of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, adapted and developed by students in the ENG/THAR 225 “Page to Stage” course offered in Fall 2025. The course, co-taught by Jared Johnson, Ph.D. and J.K. Rogers, Ph.D., challenged students to take a play from initial concept to performance.

Students studied the original text alongside film and stage adaptations while exploring adaptation theory before collaborating to create their own script. The result is a contemporary version of Much Ado About Nothing set on a 21st century college campus during the 2025-26 academic year.

The adaptation maintains the core storyline of Shakespeare’s original work while updating character names, relationships and plot elements to reflect modern life, particularly the influence of social media.

“This project gave students the opportunity to truly bring a production from the page to the stage,” said Dr. Rogers, who also serves as Director of Theater. “They were involved in every step of the process—from analyzing the original text to shaping how the story would function in a modern setting.”

The production is believed to be the first of its kind at Thiel and serves as the world premiere of this original student-developed script.

The cast features 15 performers, including three Thiel alumni, supported by an 11-person student crew.

The Thiel Players have been an integral part of campus life since the mid-20th century, offering students of all majors the opportunity to participate in live theater. The group is known for producing a variety of performances each academic year—from classic dramas to contemporary comedies and original student work—enriching both the cultural life of the College and the wider Greenville community.
