Athletic, academic and co-curricular activities bringing students back to Thiel this week

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Students in variety of academic, athletic and co-curricular programs begin returning to Thiel College this week.

A handful of students in Thiel College’s Excel Opportunities Program will arrive on Friday, Aug. 9. The rest of their class and members of the College’s Peer Mentors team arrive on Saturday, Aug. 10. The Excel Program is an immersive learning experience that offers an introduction to the resources available at Thiel College and to the college-level work and challenges first-year students can encounter. Thiel designed the program for the large number of first-generation college students they receive each year. About half of the students that attend Thiel are first-generation—meaning that this is their immediate family’s first encounter with higher education. The Excel Program was put in place to prepare these students to get the most out of their four-year experience.

Members of the Thiel Tomcat Marching Pride return to campus on Monday, Aug. 12. Six days later, the Marching Pride will perform at historic Pittsburgh amusement park Kennywood Park on Aug. 18.

Football players are the first athletes to return on Aug. 14. The Tomcats will be under the guidance of first-year coach Mike Winslow ’04. Winslow was named coach in December. The Tomcats open their 2019 schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Alumni Stadium against Alfred (N.Y.) University.

The remaining fall athletes move in on Friday Aug. 16.

First-year student move in is Aug. 24 and sophomores, juniors and seniors return on Aug. 25.

For the second year, the College’s Opening Convocation will be celebrated as the first Common Hour event on Aug. 29.
