Virginia Beach senior wins full scholarship to Thiel College worth $141,000

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Green Run High School senior James Cromwell-Young, of Virginia Beach, Va., was awarded an academic scholarship worth $141,000 to Thiel College during a surprise presentation on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Cromwell-Young was one of five winners for 2022. Toby Atwood, of Kittanning, Pa.; Alexis Brown, of Chesterland, Ohio; and Nevaeh Campbell, of Dayton, Ohio were the first recipients. The final winner has yet to be announced. Cromwell-Young won the scholarship based on his performance at a scholarship competition with about 150 other applicants in late 2021.

He plans to major in psychology.

Cromwell-Young is a member of the Virginia Flames track team and plays volleyball for club teams as well as the Green Run High School Stallions. He was voted team MVP in his senior season. He plans to play volleyball at Thiel College. Cromwell-Young has been recognized on the principal’s list and honor roll, as well as winning gold medals and awards in athletics. Cromwell-Young has been a tutor and a mentor and an active member of the 100 Strong Black Men of Hampton Roads and the treasurer for Young Ladies/Young Men, a youth leadership program in Virginia Beach for middle and high school students who carry at least a 2.7 grade point average.

Thiel College is an NCAA Division III institution and does not award athletic scholarships. Cromwell-Young’s scholarship was awarded based on his performance at the scholarship competition and his academic achievements.
