GREENVILLE, Pa.—Sonya Petersen ’28, a sophomore from Millsboro, Pa., was selected to receive the 2025 American Society of Safety Professionals Foundation Academic Scholarship, funded by Amazon.

Petersen, a double major studying environmental science and environmental safety management, was one of six students nationally to receive the $6,000 scholarship. She is a graduate of Bethlehem Center High School. Each year, the American Society of Safety Professionals Foundation Academic Scholarship Program receives hundreds of competitive applications, and out of these Petersen was selected for her demonstration of leadership, professional excellence, and integrity.

“Receiving a $6,000 scholarship funded by Amazon represents far more than a generous award, it’s a turning point in my academic journey and a catalyst for my professional aspirations in environmental science and environmental safety management at Thiel College,” Petersen said. “It reaffirms my commitment to a field of study that is critical for the well-being of our communities and our planet. I am extremely grateful for this scholarship and the opportunity to devote more time on my studies and co-curricular activities, rather than worrying about tuition and other expenses. Ultimately, this support will help me continue my education and gain the experience necessary to become a leader in environmental science and safety management.”
