Williams art story

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Shawn Williams screenprints on materials drywall and cement board will be among the pieces featured at the Weyers-Sampson Gallery at Thiel College, a leading liberal arts college in northwest Pennsylvania, for the next month.

The exhibition is open and continues through April 5. The exhibit will end with a closing reception at 2:30 p.m. April 5.

Williams work is inspired by his family’s love of working with their hands. The flatness of the screenprinting process recalls imagery in advertisements and catalogs from the 1950s. These images are updated by the sculptural use of construction materials like drywall and cement board as printing surfaces.  These ideal images of people effortlessly working on their home improvement projects offer obvious humor to anyone who has tackled projects like these on their own. Ultimately, these prints are concerned with the “idea” of work itself that is the contrast between our ideal goals and the struggle to achieve those goals.

Williams received a Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of Delaware in 2001 and a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Edinboro University in 1998. He earned a fellowship in the career development program from the Center for Emerging Artists in Philadelphia.  Williams teaches printmaking and foundation courses at Harrisburg Area Community College and has taught at the Delaware College of Art and Design.  Solo exhibitions of Williams’ work have been held at the Woodmere Art Museum, Elizabethtown College, the Doshi Gallery and Millersville University.  His work has been published in Image Transfer on Clay, by Paul Andrew Wandless and is in permanent collections at the Woodmere Art Museum, Virginia Commonwealth University, the Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia and the Southern Graphics Council.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to noon and 2-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays, gallery hours are from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public.
