GREENVILLE, Pa.-- James Dutko, who teaches music at Jamestown Senior High School, has received recognition for his outstanding dedication to mentoring and educating students. He was honored at the third annual Thiel College Mentor of the Year Awards.
Dutko (above right with Director of Admission Sonya Lapikas) was nominated for the 2024 The Performing Arts Mentor of the Year Award by Thiel sophomore public relations, advertising and integrated marketing communications major Lilyan Thomas ’26, of Jamestown, Pa.
“Mr. Dutko brought forth so much change in my life. He led me to become a stronger musician and learn to play a plethora of instruments,” Thomas said. “He helped me to become a two-time district band qualifier and a one-time district choir qualifier. He allowed me to find light in a darkness and use music to communicate and inspire others.”
The event recognizes extraordinary professional and civic contributions, celebrating the deep connections they foster within the community. Overall, six educators and six professionals from the arts; business; media, science, technology, engineering, math; education; and were recognized this year.
“Many of us fondly recall a teacher who influenced our college choice or career path,” said Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. “The Mentor Awards is an opportunity to recognize those mentors and role models who profoundly motivated a Thiel student.”
Also honored this year was Butler Institute of American Art Executive Director Louis Zona H’18, who was presented with the 2024 Leadership in the Arts Award.
