GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English, Jared Johnson, Ph.D. MBA’27 presented research examining the relationship between Shakespeare, politics and modern media at the 49th annual Ohio Valley Shakespeare Conference, held Oct. 15-17 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Johnson presented a paper titled “‘Think Upon the Wounds His Body Bears’: Media, Mediation, and the Political Body in Coriolanus.” His research examined how Shakespeare's portrayal of political figures in Coriolanus relates to modern representations of political power and public perception.

Focusing on Josie Rourke’s Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus, broadcast in 2014, and Ralph Fiennes’ 2011 film adaptation, Johnson explored how film and broadcast technologies bring new perspectives to Shakespeare's examination of political performance, public scrutiny and the relationship between leaders and audiences.

The conference, themed “Shakespeare and Technology,” brought together scholars to explore topics including theatrical and film adaptations, authorship attribution, artificial intelligence and early modern printing technologies.
