GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College has revamped its computer science curriculum and introduced a new interdisciplinary minor in information systems, aimed at preparing students for dynamic careers at the intersection of technology, business, and innovation.

The updates include enhancements to Thiel’s longstanding Bachelor of Arts in computer science as well as the launch of a reimagined Bachelor of Science in computer information systems and a new minor in computer information systems. The CIS program is designed for students who want to apply technology to real-world business problems while developing strong technical, analytical, and communication skills. It combines foundational computing knowledge with coursework in business, cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and systems management.

“Technology is central to every industry,” Associate Professor of Math & Computer Science Thomas Dulaney, Ph.D. said. “These curricular changes ensure that our graduates are prepared to lead in a rapidly evolving digital environment, equipped not only with technical expertise but with the strategic thinking needed to make an impact.”

Unlike traditional computer science programs that emphasize coding and theory, Thiel’s CIS degree offers a broader and more applied approach. Students gain hands-on experience managing data, building and securing systems, and integrating technical solutions into business operations. Through real-world projects—including collaborations with external organizations—students learn to bridge the gap between technology and people, helping companies operate more efficiently and securely.

The CIS curriculum is also designed to be flexible. With fewer required credits than many traditional majors, students can more easily combine CIS with another major or minor, tailoring their education to match their interests and career goals. Meanwhile, the new minor in information systems offers students in other disciplines the opportunity to enhance their studies with a technology-focused credential. By combining elements of computing, communication, and management, the minor prepares students from any background to effectively use and understand information systems in their chosen field.

Students who are more interested in the theoretical and scientific foundations of computing will continue to have access to Thiel’s traditional Bachelor of Science in computer science. This degree remains grounded in classical computer science disciplines while incorporating modern tools and applications that prepare graduates for research, software development, and advanced study.
