GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College has awarded its fifth and final full-tuition scholarship of the year to Blake McCowin, a junior at Crestview High School in Negley, Ohio.

The scholarship was presented during a virtual ceremony held Thursday morning after the in-person event was canceled for the third time due to inclement weather.

“This is amazing,” Blake McCowin said. “This is so exciting!”

Blake’s mother, Mandy, said the scholarship is “a huge honor. It means so much.”

McCowin, of Negley, Ohio, plans to major in communication sciences and disorders/speech-language pathology. She is the daughter of Mandy and Chad McCowin and the granddaughter of George and Marcella Mackall, Evelyn and Todd Davis, and Bill and Beth McCowin. McCowin is a junior who is graduating early.

“Blake exemplifies the type of student we seek to support through this scholarship—someone who combines academic strength with leadership, service and a clear sense of purpose,” said Sonya Lapikas, director of admission at Thiel College. “Her commitment to her education and to serving others aligns well with Thiel’s mission, and we are excited to welcome her to campus.”

A 4.0 student, McCowin has demonstrated strong involvement across academics, the arts and service. Her activities include a lead role in theater, House Band, Academic Challenge, French National Honor Society, track, three years of volleyball, the C.A.S.H. Coalition, Junior Leadership alumni, Dual Language Club, church leadership, prom committee, and serving as student council vice president. She is a two-time Good Citizenship Award recipient and an American Legion Good Character Award winner and works at Lovie’s Ice Cream.

At Thiel, we believe a great education should be affordable. That’s why we go out of our way to support students through generous merit aid and scholarships—so cost never stands in the way of opportunity, Lapikas said.

Conneaut (Linesville, Pa.) High School senior Abigail Beightol was awarded the first scholarship on Jan. 15. The following day, South Side (Hookstown, Pa.) High School senior Paxton Short and Shaler (Pittsburgh, Pa.) High School senior Matthew Britenbaugh were awarded scholarships. Violet Seaman, a senior at Lake (Ohio) High School, was awarded the fourth scholarship on January 23.
