GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College Department of English faculty member Sheila Farr, Ph.D. ’10 presented an academic paper at the 43rd annual Nineteenth-Century Studies Association Conference hosted by the University of Rochester earlier this spring.

Titled “Radicalism and Reform,” this year’s conference featured renowned historian Manisha Sinha, Ph.D. as the keynote speaker, whose address focused on international concerns of the abolition movement. Presenters from North America and abroad explored the impact had by radicalism and reform on nineteenth-century transatlantic literature, history, art, journalism, music, and language during the conference held on March 17–19.

Farr, an Assistant Professor of English and alumna, presented her paper, “The Radical Social Experiment of Companionship: Married Love in Victorian Cinderella Adaptations.” Her presentation explored the subtly subversive examples of emotional and intellectual companionship between courting characters in Cinderella adaptations from Victorian periodicals in comparison to the relationships represented in the popular Victorian novel North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.
