Thiel celebrating alumni, faculty, staff and students at College’s Martin Luther King event

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College announces that as part of the celebration and recognition of Martin Luther King Jr., it will host its second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Banquet that will honor members of the Thiel College community who embody the ideals of the civil rights leader.

The event begins at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

The event’s theme is “The Celebration of Mindfulness, Love and Kindness.” Students, faculty and staff members, alumni and community members are eligible for Martin Luther King Jr. Thiel College Community Service Awards. In addition to honoring members of the Thiel College community, Professor David Miller ’61, who began teaching at the College in 1963 and is the longest-tenured professor in the school’s 154-year history, will be the keynote speaker for the event.

Thiel student community service award winner is Trevon Wilmer ’21. The Faculty/Staff award will go to Angella Bradley, and the Alumni/Community award will be given to Ronald Shadd ’98.

Wilmer is a Thiel College junior and a 2015 graduate of Colonel Richardson High School. He is a psychology major from Preston, Md. He is a member of the Organization of Black Collegians and works in the Thiel College Office of College Advancement. He is also a member of the College’s Alumni Career Engagement Fellows.
Bradley is the Coordinator of Events and Multicultural Recruitment in Thiel College’s Office of Admission. She is also the advisor for the new Black Sisters Connected organization that was created in the fall of 2019.
Shadd is a member of the Youngstown City School District, Board of Education. He was a psychology and philosophy double major at Thiel College and participated in basketball, football, track, cross country, choir and theater while at Thiel. He has several years of experience in early childhood education, youth and adult workforce and career training, the Fatherhood Initiative programming and has been involved with several community organizations and projects.

The banquet will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center. Doors will open at 4 p.m.

“These awards offer our community a chance to come together and recognize the positive role models who are in our midst every day both in the Thiel community but also in the greater community that extends far off campus,” Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion Anthony E. Jones said. “Whether it’s as a professor who has seen the winds of change sweep across campus during the Civil Rights era, a student championing diversity on campus, a staff member who gave women a platform to spread a message of diversity and empowerment or an alumnus who is fighting for public education, our speaker and each of these winners represents an important piece of Dr. King’s philosophy.”
