GREENVILLE, Pa.—Anthony E. Jones is the new Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at Thiel College, a leading liberal arts college in northwest Pennsylvania.
Jones started in the role on July 5. He will lead efforts to foster and maintain an increasingly inclusive environment that welcomes, embraces, supports, and celebrates diversity in all its forms at Thiel College.
“I look forward to growing and enhancing Thiel College’s traditions of inclusion, openness, and understanding. More than 150 years ago, Thiel began as a coeducational college. Today, many first-generation college students get their introduction to higher education at Thiel,” Jones said. “It’s vital that our community works together closely to make sure that everyone on campus—students, faculty, staff, visitors, alumni—feels safe, respected and connected to the community.”
Jones is a doctoral candidate at Eastern Kentucky University with research that focuses on assessing the value of multiculturalism at predominately white institutions.
“Anthony brings an outstanding breadth and depth of knowledge and experience to our office after successfully serving at University of Mount Union, Marietta College, Virginia Commonwealth University and Eastern Kentucky University,” said Mike McKinney ’02, vice president of student life, dean of students and Title IX co-coordinator. “He can also help us with virtually everything that comes into our office and will be an asset for students, faculty, and staff.”
Diversity at Thiel includes ethnicity, race, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, whether a person has physical or mental limitations, religion, country of origin, veteran’s status, socio-economic backgrounds or cultural backgrounds. Serving as a resource to all students, faculty, and staff, the Associate Dean’s role will include advocacy, student services, program development, and training/outreach. The Associate Dean will collaborate with offices and individuals across campus to advance inclusion and support students through recruitment and retention efforts, advising student organizations, enhancing curriculum, eliminating barriers to success and participation, and serving as a Designated School Official to assist with immigration services and support.
Jones worked as the director of multicultural affairs at Marietta College and Eastern Kentucky University. He conducted programs to educate campus populations of minority groups, social issues and cultural competence. He has led diversity conferences and taught courses on the first-year experience, community engagement and global education. Additionally, his student group advising experience includes overseeing the black student union, Latino student association, international student association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Rainbow Alliance and Men of Character. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Jones received a B.A. in art from the University of Mount Union. His graduate work includes a Master’s degree in student personnel from Eastern Kentucky University. He is completing his doctorate of educational leadership and policy studies from Eastern Kentucky University and anticipates completion in 2019.
