Derry Area High School senior awarded full-tuition scholarship to Thiel College

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Derry Area High School senior Cydney Wierzbowski, of Derry, Pa., was awarded an academic scholarship worth $134,964 to Thiel College during a surprise presentation at the high school Tuesday morning.

Wierzbowski was one of five winners for 2023 from among a field of 136 applicants. She plans to major in business administration and minor in communications, as she is interested in event planning and has aspirations of owning her own business that caters for parties, weddings, and other events.

Wierzbowski is active at her high school and in her community. She is in the Science National Honor Society, is a class officer/treasurer, works on the prom committee, and is the secretary of Mu Alpha Theta, the high school and junior college mathematics club. She manages the school’s social media and is involved in the school newspaper. Wierzbowski is also involved in the all-class play where she builds and moves sets. She is the stage manager for the school’s musical, and through her floral design class, she has designed and made the flowers for the homecoming dance and other events. In addition, Wierzbowski is a majorette and the captain of the Derry Marching Band. She throws discus and shotput for her school track and field team and serves as an academic tutor to other students. She was Homecoming queen this past year. She volunteers at a food bank, teaches gymnastics, and has a part-time job.

She is the daughter of Carrie Namisnak and the sister of Sienna Wierzbowski, who is a sophomore at Derry Area High School.
