Brynn Houser ’30 made Homecoming weekend a little more memorable when she nailed a 15-yard field goal at halftime of Saturday’s football game against Hiram College, winning a $1,000 prize.
Houser was selected from students who registered for the halftime field goal challenge, sponsored by Delta Sigma Phi alumni. One registered student was chosen for the opportunity to attempt the kick—and Houser made hers count.
The $1,000 field goal challenge will return at each of Thiel’s remaining home football games, including this Saturday’s night game against Allegheny College at Stoeber Field at Alumni Stadium. Students can register for a chance to be selected to attempt the kick.

On Sept. 22, two recent Thiel graduates shared their experiences as entrepreneurs. Casey Yacos ’25, a former Student Entrepreneur of the Year honoree, is the founder of Selling by KC, an online clothing retailer she operates through Instagram. Trey Wilt ’23 is the owner of Wilt Landscaping, which provides lawncare and landscaping services throughout Greenville and the surrounding region. Both entrepreneurs shared their personal journeys into business ownership and offered valuable advice, insights, and takeaways for the class.
Key Student Takeaways:
Platinum Rule – Treat others the way they want to be treated – Khamari Accursio-Harris ’27
First lesson is to start now and not give up. A second lesson is to be authentic and keep up with the morals you have. – Sam Draa ’28
Casey spoke about the importance of consistency and understanding that the person who continues to show up will be successful. She also discussed how different trends play a role in the process of her business and the importance of staying updated on what is happening. – Noah Leffingwell ’28
Trey shared with us some experiences about the importance of writing things off for an LLC. In addition, he started the business 16 days after he finished college – Ryan Wilson ’28
Both speakers showed that successful entrepreneurship does not require having everything figured out from the beginning. Instead, they learned through experience, adapted to challenges, and gradually developed their businesses. – Yunjeong Ryu ’27
Create a budget for your life. Make your passion profitable. Consistency, Consistency – Anna Kavulla ’26
Be open-minded. You are who you surround yourself with. Always make room to grow – Cydney Wierzbowski ’27

Faculty and staff gathered Sept. 22 for the first Thiel News Time (TNT) of the fall semester, where President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., shared updates on enrollment, new academic programs and expanding athletics opportunities.

Academic updates included Thiel’s agreement with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) that provides an accelerated pathway consisting of two years at Thiel followed by four years of medical school, as well as the College’s online Speech-Language Pathology offering and plans for an additional online master’s degree.
TNT provides faculty and staff with opportunities to gather during Community Hour, hear College updates and share questions, comments and announcements. The remaining fall sessions are Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sawhill Georgian Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

The Student Life Emergency Pantry is seeking donations of nonperishable food items and monetary contributions to support students experiencing financial hardship, including students who remain on campus during breaks and commuter students.

The Sept. 16 speaker for the entrepreneurship class was Katie Swain, founder of a nonprofit called Brown Horse Projects. Swain spoke about her organization’s work providing underserved communities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic with medical care. She also touched on the importance of avoiding "toxic charity" and how to build genuine relationships with communities you aim to serve.
Key Student Takeaways
... another lesson Katie talked about was how to never walk past an open door. She talked about how she almost turned down an internship offer and she was very glad she didn’t. This really stood out for me because you never want to waste the opportunity you are given. Andrew Yocum ’27
A central philosophy is avoiding “toxic charity,” the practice of short-term, one-off visits solely to make volunteers feel good. Instead, they commit to yearly check-ins and sustainable support. Bri Whaley ’27
Show up with something to say. Brady Wear ’28
I was impressed that her 30 years in marketing are still useful in a medical nonprofit. I am a senior now, but I still have not decided on my future career. So her words, “nothing is wasted,” were a comfort to me. Even if I do not have a clear plan right now, what I am doing now may help me someday. Mikyung Kong ’27
Considering the vast responsibilities Katie has, she was able to offer perspective into all sides of a nonprofit and the realities of running one. She talked about things that you may not even have considered until you were actually in the field. Spencer Cleary ’28
Do the right thing / give what you can. Organization and details matter. Family first always. Aden Sasala ’27
The most memorable lesson for me was that 'nothing is wasted.' Learning that even experiences that seem completely unrelated to one's current career can become valuable assets in the future really ignited my passion. Seoyeon Moon ’27

Thiel’s Environmental Services team received some well-deserved recognition during Environmental Services Week. Members of the campus community recognized the employees who help keep the College clean, safe and welcoming.

Environmental Services Week recognizes the often behind-the-scenes work of professionals responsible for maintaining clean, healthy and comfortable environments. At Thiel, their impact extends well beyond sparkling floors and well-kept spaces—the team’s daily work helps create a campus where students, employees and visitors can feel at home.
The cards displayed in the HMSC shared personal notes of appreciation and offered a visible reminder that the team’s hard work does not go unnoticed.
Thank you to every member of Thiel’s Environmental Services team for everything you do for the campus community!

As announced at the All Campus Retreat, Thiel College’s Join the Journey capital campaign brings together philanthropic support for priorities that will strengthen the College and the student experience for years to come.
A capital campaign is a focused, long-term fundraising effort designed to secure significant support for an institution’s strategic priorities. As faculty and staff, understanding the campaign and the projects it supports helps all of us see—and communicate—how philanthropy is shaping Thiel and creating opportunities for our students.
From time to time, T-Notes will highlight examples of that impact.
One can be found just outside Hodge Hall. As part of the Class of 1971 Quadrangle project, members of the class raised funds in celebration of their 50th reunion to enhance the seating area. At the time, their contribution represented the largest class gift ever made in honor of a Thiel reunion year.
The project created a welcoming outdoor space for conversation and connection that is now used by individual students, clubs and organizations. It also serves as a lasting reminder of the Class of 1971’s experiences at Thiel and its commitment to future generations of students.
The College is grateful to the Class of 1971 for its leadership, vision and generosity—and for helping the next generation of Tomcats continue the journey.

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.
Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.
For more information, email the office.
Submit updates and news
The Office of Communications and Marketing is always looking for good content that can be featured in the weekly staff newsletter (T-Notes), the student newsletter (Thiel Happenings), the website Newsroom or on social media.
Please send any information about you, your students, your department or your colleagues to Dominick DiRienzo M.A.’22.
The updates can include information about anything your department is featuring this year, any faculty accomplishments or student activity.
These updates do not have to meet a “newsworthiness” standard and do not have to be things that you are specifically doing or hosting.
If you have any questions, contact DiRienzo at ext. 2188.
Publishing Schedule
T-Notes is published Wednesdays during the academic year. Send your event or news to tnotes@thiel.edu by noon Sept. 8, 2026 to be published in that week’s edition. The next edition will be published Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026.
