GREENVILLE, Pa.—Holy Name High School senior Leila Orellana, of Cleveland, Ohio, won an academic scholarship worth $146,000 to Thiel College during a surprise presentation Friday morning at the high school.
Orellana is one of five full tuition scholarship winners. She was chosen from a field of 767 eligible students and 177 applicants. Winners were chosen after participating in one of two scholarship competitions where students were interviewed by faculty and staff members. She plans to major in chemistry.
Orellana is a member of the tennis team, national honors society, student ambassadors, medical club, environmental club, female empowerment club, French club, coffee club, and competitive Irish dance. She is also the manager for the girls basketball team.
She volunteers for middle school athletics for Catholic Youth Organization sporting events and for clean ups in the city’s Metroparks system. Orellana also is a potential volunteer for Kairos Retreat, a religious weekend retreat for young women.
