GREENVILLE, Pa.-- The Thiel College chapter of Sigma Kappa sorority distributed free books to students and also donated books to the library at Greenville Elementary School on Sept. 21 through the group’s “Tackling Literacy” project.

Sigma Kappa was awarded a $2,500 grant for the project through their national organization’s 1874 Giving Circle. According to Sigma Kappa’s website, this project will allow the chapter to give a book to every student K-6 in the Greenville school district. There are nearly 1,350 students in the entire district and approximately 600-700 in grades kindergarten through six.

The Thiel College chapter was eligible for the grant due to its charitable giving through the sorority’s 1874 Giving Circle. Chapter President Annika Schul ’19, an early childhood education and special education major from State College, Pa., wrote the grant application on behalf of the chapter. After a national voting process, the Thiel chapter was selected to receive funding to complete this grant project.
