GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Thomas Dulaney, Ph.D. highlighted the growing importance of career paths across nearly all industries in computer science, networking, cybersecurity and information systems as part of a feature in a regional business publication examining in-demand careers.

Dulaney was quoted in a Youngstown Business Journal article discussing the increasing need for professionals who can manage and secure computer systems.

“If you are a business with a computer system, somebody better know something about security,” Dulaney said in the article.

Dulaney noted that career opportunities extend beyond cybersecurity, emphasizing the need for professionals who can manage servers and handle large volumes of data traffic. He added that while some companies outsource specialized services such as cybersecurity, organizations still rely on employees with a strong understanding of computing fundamentals.

Dulaney also emphasized the importance of foundational knowledge in computer science education, noting that core programming concepts remain consistent even as technologies evolve.

“Regardless of what programming language you will use, it hasn’t changed significantly since the beginning of computer programming,” he said.

At Thiel College, that emphasis on fundamentals is paired with recent updates to academic programs designed to prepare students for a wide range of technology careers.

The College has enhanced its longstanding Bachelor of Arts in computer science and introduced a reimagined Bachelor of Science in computer information systems, along with a new interdisciplinary minor in computer information systems.

The CIS program is designed for students who want to apply technology to real-world business challenges while developing skills in areas such as cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence and systems management. Students gain hands-on experience through projects that involve managing data, building and securing systems, and integrating technology into organizational operations.

The program’s flexible structure allows students to combine the major or minor with other areas of study, helping them tailor their education to specific career goals. The new minor also provides students from a variety of disciplines with an opportunity to develop technology-focused skills that complement their primary field of study.

Students interested in a more traditional pathway can pursue Thiel’s Bachelor of Science in computer science, which remains grounded in theoretical and scientific principles while incorporating modern tools and applications.

Through its updated curriculum and focus on both foundational knowledge and applied learning, Thiel College aims to prepare graduates for careers in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
