GREENVILLE, Pa.—Armstrong Junior/Senior High School senior Steven Wright, of Ford City, Pa., was awarded an academic scholarship worth $133,000 to Thiel College during a surprise presentation at the school on Dec. 19.
Wright was one of five winners for 2019. The scholarship was granted based on his academic and civic accomplishments and his performance during a scholarship competition at Thiel College that was attended by 150 students. Wright is a member of the National Honor Society, senior class president and was math league MVP and Varsity Quiz Bowl team member. He is also involved with IMPACT youth group and Crooked Creek Presbyterian Church. Wright plans to study math at Thiel College.
“This scholarship is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Wright said. “I am going to use this opportunity to fulfill my college career, my future life and everything I do.”
He is the son of Mark and Becky Wright, of Ford City, Pa. The scholarship was presented to Wright in front of family, friends and a representative of Thiel College. School administrators and teachers were also on hand and included band teacher Jason Veneski, academic principal Mike Cominos and guidance counselor Dave Zablocki.
“We are excited to have Steven join the Thiel College family. Every year we get to meet some amazing students! They all have worked hard to get to where they are and deserve the scholarship,” Ashley Josay Zullo, vice president for enrollment management, said. “We are confident he will share his enthusiasm for contributing with the entire community during his college career and beyond.”
This is the third year for the scholarship competition and presentation ceremony.
