Sigma Kappa national sorority recognizes Thiel College graduate with position and scholarship

Thiel College graduate Annika Schul ’19 was chosen for a pair of honors by the national organization of her sorority Sigma Kappa. She is undergoing training at Sigma Kappa’s national headquarters in Carmel, Ind. for her position as a leadership consultant with the organization.

Alumna explains what makes Thiel College unique

Terri Eddy ’19 had a one-of-a-kind experience the first time she came to Thiel College and explains why she chose Thiel to be her home for the next four years. Throughout the summer, Thiel graduates will be the subject of short documentaries about “Why Thiel?”.

Sharon Regional announces hiring events and June programs

Sharon Regional Medical Center announces the schedule for its June community-based free health and wellness programs to provide prevention and education on important health-related topics. All events are free and open to the public.

The next Healthy Living series event is “Know the Facts About Breast Cancer” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 in the Sawhill-Georgian Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

Dr. Maryann Payne, breast surgeon, will discuss the latest facts about causes, risk factors, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Sharon Regional is also hosting an RN & LPN hiring event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 at the Sharon Regional Diagnostic & Imaging Center, 2435 Garden Way in Hermitage. The event is geared for hiring both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses for a variety of departments across the Sharon Regional system.

Childbirth Education Series

Registration is open for a 5-week session that will cover the birthing process, breathing and relaxation techniques, the role of the support person, and the cesarean birth experience. Tours of the Women’s Center at Sharon Regional will also be available. 

The next session is scheduled for July 11, 18, 25, and August 1, 8 at the Sharon Regional Diagnostic & Imaging Center located at 2435 Garden Way in Hermitage.  Cost is $25 for the 5-week series.

Healthy Steps Walking Program:

Sharon Regional Medical Center and the American Heart Association have partnered on a free community-based walking program. Participants can walk and talk with experts who are available to answer fitness and health questions along the way at the next installment at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 at Buhl Park fitness trail in Hermitage

When Diet and Exercise Aren’t Enough

A free educational seminar featuring Sharon Regional’s Sheetal Nijhawan, M.D., fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon, to learn more about the bariatric surgery program at Sharon Regional. Sessions include information on obesity, a review of surgical weight loss options including benefits and risks, Body Mass Index, along with other information to assist participants in making an informed decision about surgical weight loss treatments.

Sharon Regional Health Watch

Tune in to Sharon Regional’s “Health Watch” Health Education Hour on 790 AM WPIC Radio on the last Tuesday of each month. Listen as area physicians discuss health topics. Next episode is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 on 790 AM WPIC Radio.

Youngstown high school students experience campus 

Students from East High School in Youngstown participated in the Youngstown Early Identification Program during the first week of June. The students took enrichment courses on campus during the day and participated in activities during the evening.

Nick Sarratori selected as faculty speaker for East Valley H.S.

Nick Sarratori ’18 was the student-selected staff speaker at the commencement for East Valley High School (Yakima, Wash.).

Sarratori, of Eden, N.Y., was one of seven valedictorians in the Class of 2018 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and majored in history and earned his secondary education teacher certification. He is a 2014 graduate of Eden Junior Senior High School.

Tomcat Tributes recognize the teamwork Thiel College employees exhibit each day. Employees can nominate co-workers for recognition in four categories (Random Act of Kindness, Going the Extra Mile, Had a Great Idea, Just Because).

Office of Communications and Marketing Essentials

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.

Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.

Summer Hours updates

TC Café

The TC Café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays for lunch. Price is $6.25 (cash only). Several options, including salad bar, are available.

Post Office

The Campus Post Office/ Mail Services will have slightly limited service available on the following dates:

Post Office hours for Thursday, June 20 and Monday, June 24 are 9 a.m. to  3:30 p.m. Hours for Friday, June 21 are 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

All incoming mail/packages will be sorted and delivered and rounds for mail delivery/pick-up will take place.

Letters and Flats will be metered (postage applied) and prepaid UPS and USPS Packages can be sent.

ICM’s will be distributed and all metered mail, pre-stamped mail will be taken to the Greenville post office daily.

The post office will not be able to process outgoing:

All regular services will resume on Tuesday, June 25.

The Fitness Center is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tennis court hours at 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (lower courts) open seven days a week. The Dr. Barry ’71 and Carol ’70 Stamm Track & Field Complex is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

GSO Speakeasy Fundraiser
June 29 from 7–10 p.m.

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will be holding a Speakeasy fundraiser as part of their 90th-year celebration. Tickets are $50 per person and include live music, heavy hors d’oeuvres, entry in a reverse raffle, a costume contest, dance contest and more.

3rd annual Color Me Happy 5K Race, Roll & Stroll

The 3rd annual Color Me Happy 5K Race, Roll & Stroll is June 29 at St. Paul’s. Cost is $15 for racers registered before June 12, after June 12 cost is $20.

Schmoll awarded regional Rotary award

Greenville Rotarian and president-elect and Thiel College Senior Vice President for Finance and Management Bob Schmoll was presented a “Person of Action” award at the 2019 Rotary District 7280 Conference held in Erie, Pa. recently.

Hodge Institute brings faculty together

Thiel College faculty members recently completed the seventh annual Dr. Edwin Hodge Jr. Institute for Teaching and Learning for summer 2019.

Funded by the Emma Clyde Hodge Memorial Fund, the Hodge Institute is an intensive, cross-disciplinary faculty development workshop that takes place each summer.

Faculty members met in departmental/small groups in early May to assess positives and negatives in the curriculum, as well as in teaching strategies. After meeting in groups, faculty members came together to present and discuss their conclusions. The goal is to have a refined curriculum that meets the needs of students and faculty members.

The latest edition of The Bell is out.

The latest edition of The Bell contains great photographs from campus events and an exploration of the many different ways the campus creates community. Read the heart-warming story of the baseball team stepping in to support their friend Tom Sun ’19 for senior recognition, how about 50 years later Commencement speaker William Strickland Jr. rekindled his love affair with the College or how Greek philanthropies are making a difference across the region.

The TC Café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays for lunch. Price is $6.25 (cash only). Several options, including salad bar, are available.

Post Office

The post office will conduct rounds Monday–Thursday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Mail to be processed needs to be to the post office by 3:20 p.m. On Friday, one round will be conducted at 11:30 a.m.  Mail to be processed needs to be to the post office by 1:15 p.m. 

Anyone with a large mailing must contact Anita Lillie at ext. 2230 a day in advance to schedule a drop off time to ensure adequate time to process.

The Post Office will close at 3:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1:45 p.m. Friday.

Thiel College will host members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Northwest Pennsylvania Synod for their annual assembly.

Riverside Family Campout
June 14–16
Riverside Park, Greenville

A family campout event is at Riverside Park from June 14–16. Events are scheduled throughout the weekend and include a food truck party, movie night, fishing, archery and hatchet-throwing, obstacle course, bike rodeo, cornhole tournament, barbeque, music, bonfire and 5K run.
