GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College will host a one-day sketching workshop led by artist and former faculty member William J. Mancuso on Saturday, June 7, in Room 301 of the Daniel and Dorothy Spence Academic Center. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is designed to encourage participants to explore sketching as a mindful, enjoyable activity that brings attention to the details of everyday life.

The workshop is open to the public. The registration fee is $195 plus a small processing charge and includes all art materials. Each participant will receive a sketching kit valued at $45, which includes a small watercolor sketchbook, waterbrush, compact watercolor palette with professional-grade paint, waterproof pen, water-soluble pencil, light-duty sketchbook, and a portable carrying case.

Participants will take part in a mid-day break, allowing time to enjoy lunch at one of the nearby restaurants or to bring their own and relax on campus.

Mancuso, who taught at Thiel College for nine years, focuses on helping artists at all levels sketch freely and attentively. The workshop will introduce techniques using pen, watercolor, and water-soluble pencil, with informal discussion on perspective, color, and composition. The emphasis will be on the experience of sketching rather than producing finished artwork.

“Working small allows me to sketch more, to see more, to explore and discover more about the world around me,” Mancuso said. “Sketching doesn’t have to be a preparation for something grander, nor does it have to be a competitive sport. It’s OK to sketch just to enjoy and explore the world I live in, to pay attention, and to notice what I notice.”

Mancuso holds degrees from SUNY College at Brockport and the University at Buffalo, and his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including his 2023 show The Pleasures of Sketching at Thiel’s Weyers-Sampson Art Gallery.
