Fred Staloff’s selected works on display at Thiel College’s Weyers-Sampson Gallery

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College’s Weyers-Sampson Gallery will present the works of Fred Staloff on loan from the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.

The exhibition begins with a gallery talk at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 and will be on display until April 3.

An American artist, who passed away in 2019, Staloff was a veteran of World War II, painted most of his life, studied in Paris and held exhibits throughout the United States for many years.

“Fred Staloff is blessed with an eye for composition. And while his career demonstrates the classic twists and turns of most of the great painters from history, he remains devoted to creating an exciting visual experience for the viewer. His approach to painting can be said to derive from the visually oriented work of Paul Cézanne, yet it also owes much to the emotional energies of both the European and the American brands of Expressionism,” according to the Butler Institute’s webpage about Staloff.

“The painting may emerge intuitively from some inner need. Until the present, I have always felt the need to situate my forms in space, sometimes shallow, sometimes deeper. I assiduously avoid the flat rendition of form which leads to decoration or stylization,” Staloff said before his passing.

Exhibits at Weyers-Sampson Gallery are free and open to the public.
