GREENVILLE, Pa.—Coventry High School senior Brice Hiner, of Coventry Township, Ohio, won an academic scholarship worth $146,000 to Thiel College during a surprise presentation Thursday morning at the high school.
Hiner is one of five full tuition scholarship winners. He was chosen from a field of 767 eligible students and 177 applicants. Winners were chosen after participating in one of two scholarship competitions where students were interviewed by faculty and staff members. He plans to major in business management.
Hiner organizes a fall clean-up in the community. He brings together other students who head out into the community and clean yards. He also organizes the local rose delivery as part of a Kiwanis fundraiser. He has also written Santa letters for children as a fundraiser as well as working stadium clean-up after home football games. Hiner is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers for the Red Cross blood drive.
As a junior, Hiner was the male recipient of the school’s Citizenship Award. He was a member of the Building Advisory Team where he assisted with orientations for new students/ninth-graders, helped at the Santa shop at the elementary school, worked at the elementary book fair and helped at the pancake breakfast with Santa at the middle school. He was a scholar-athlete at Coventry High School, playing soccer his sophomore, junior and senior seasons as well as kicking for the football team in his sophomore and junior years. He also worked about 90 hours each summer the past two years as a camp counselor for three weeks during Akron Metro Futbol Club soccer camp.
