GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College Vice President of Student Life Michael McKinney ’02 will be recognized as an influential young leader during this year’s Mercer County chambers of commerce “40 under Forty” awards ceremony.
This year’s “40 Under Forty” celebration is at 5:30 p.m. April 6 at the Park Inn by Radisson in West Middlesex, Pa. The event is presented by the Greenville, Grove City, and Mercer area chambers of commerce and the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce.
McKinney began working for his alma mater after graduating in 2002. He started his career as a resident director while attending graduate school at Youngstown State University. His original two-year appointment has grown into a 14-year career. McKinney rose to Dean of Students at Thiel College and began serving on the President’s Cabinet by age 29. Four years later, he became Vice President of Student Life.
In his time as vice president, the number of students returning to Thiel College for their second year has increased 10 percent. In addition, he has played an important role in improving Thiel College’s graduation outcomes. Among students reporting, 96.5 percent of Thiel College’s Class of 2014 was employed in their field or accepted to graduate school within six months of graduation. McKinney also led the Thiel College “Great Colleges to Work For” task force the past several years. A national survey completed by employees for the task force last year had scores that were up significantly in every major category. His commitment extends beyond the workplace. He is a Greenville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors member.
“Mike is a student-centered leader and great collaborator. He cares deeply about Thiel College and our students, as well as the Greenville community,” said Thiel College President Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D. “He works diligently to demonstrate that commitment on a daily basis.”
