GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. underscored the College’s strong ties to Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania in an editorial featured in Pittsburgh Quarterly recently. This editorial was part of the magazine’s exploration of Pittsburgh as a college town.

Traverso was among several leaders from regional universities and colleges who responded to the question: “Given continuing enrollment declines and our civic need to attract and retain young people, is it desirable to significantly build on fledgling programs to engage students with the region’s amenities, enhancing both the college-town atmosphere and a lasting connection to our area? If so, in what ways could you envision contributing to such a project?”

In her response, Traverso highlighted Thiel’s extensive alumni network in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, noting, “Thiel College has strong ties to Pittsburgh, with hundreds of active and proud alumni in and around the city, including many talented recent graduates pursuing career opportunities and advanced studies in the Pittsburgh region.” Thiel’s affiliation with Pittsburgh’s Dietrich Foundation further strengthens these connections, creating opportunities for students to engage with the region’s dynamic economy and distinctive cultural amenities.

A signature element of Thiel’s commitment to regional engagement is its longstanding fundraiser for Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Over the past 55 years, the College has raised nearly $2 million through an annual walk from Greenville to Pittsburgh. This tradition, involving students, alumni, and friends, exemplifies Thiel’s dedication to community service and meaningful regional involvement.

Beyond academics, Traverso emphasized Thiel’s focus on encouraging students to experience Pittsburgh’s cultural and recreational offerings, fostering a deep and lasting connection to the area. “In this way, the college infuses new talent and positive energy into the Pittsburgh and northwest Pennsylvania area,” she stated, highlighting Thiel’s commitment to sustaining the region’s economic and social vitality.

Traverso’s insights were featured in the print edition of Pittsburgh Quarterly in late September and as the headlining response in the magazine’s weekly email series in late October.
