GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College, a leading liberal arts college in northwest Pennsylvania, will host approximately 600 members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s two western Pennsylvania synods beginning Thursday, June 14.
Thiel College President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., will formally welcome the Northwestern and Southwestern synod members Thursday. The groups will hold their assembly starting Thursday and continue meeting through Saturday morning.
As part of the assembly, Abraham Jam will perform a free concert that is open to the public at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the William Passavant Memorial Center. A freewill offering will be collected at the concert for the internationally-known trio that combines music and spoken word performances.
“The assembly gathering at Thiel College is a wonderful opportunity for our synods to support their local ELCA campus, connect their members to College community and remind others of the value of the College as a regional asset,” Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Mike McKinney ’02 said. “Whether it is serving as a host site for meetings and conferences or hosting our own camps, these are tremendous occasions to showcase the College’s facilities and resources.”
The bishops of both Synods have connections to Thiel College. Northwestern Synod Bishop Rev. Ralph Jones H’05 was awarded an honorary degree in 2005, and Southwestern Synod Bishop Rev. Kurt Kusserow ’85 graduated from Thiel College in 1985.
