GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College is hosting the Community Medical Ethics Project’s speaker Greer Donley, J.D., a prominent voice in the national conversation on reproductive rights, at 11 a.m. April 18 in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

The event is free and open to the public. Donley is the John E. Murray Faculty Scholar and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh. Her scholarship has been cited by the Supreme Court and has been influential in shaping policy. Donley will address the complexities surrounding abortion law in her lecture titled “Post-Dobbs Abortion Uncertainty.” Her expertise, honed through extensive research and advocacy, sheds light on the legal turmoil following the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.

Donley brings a wealth of knowledge and critical insight to the current debate on abortion rights. Her work spans the top legal journals, including the Stanford, Columbia, Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Minnesota Law Reviews. With over 20,000 downloads, her co-authored paper “The New Abortion Battleground” has resonated widely, sparking discussions from academia to the Supreme Court. In the wake of the Dobbs decision, Donley’s voice has become even more crucial. Her role in pioneering the first abortion shield law and influencing FDA regulations underscores her commitment to practical legal reform.

In her upcoming talk, Donley will dissect the discrepancies between medical and legal definitions of abortion and how these divergences have real-world consequences. She will discuss the legislative reactions to these tragedies and the struggle to separate abortion from broader reproductive healthcare in the wake of Dobbs. This analysis is vital for understanding the legislative landscape that is failing to coherently address the intersection of abortion with other medical necessities.

As the nation grapples with the reverberations of the Supreme Court's decision, Thiel College invites students, faculty, healthcare professionals, legal experts, and community members to engage with Professor Donley's crucial insights. This event promises to be a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse surrounding medical ethics and the law.

The presentation qualifies for continuing education credits for medical professionals.

The Community Medical Ethics Project is a collaboration between Thiel College, Buhl Regional Health Foundation, UPMC Horizon, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and St. Paul’s Senior Living Community. Its mission is to help people in the community better understand medical ethics issues so that they can make better decisions involving their healthcare.
