Thiel College Athletics Reunion Weekend plans finalized

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Events for the Thiel College Athletics Reunion Weekend on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 have been unveiled, and online reservations are now being accepted through May 10.

“We are all excited for the Athletics Reunion Weekend,” said Kraig R. Smith ’12, director of alumni relations. “There are multiple events and special announcements planned, and I encourage everyone to come back for this special weekend.”

The Athletics Reunion Weekend will kick off Friday, May 29 with the annual Blue-Gold Golf Outing, which will be held at the Greens of Greenville. Golf will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Golfers may register as individuals ($100) or as a twosome ($200), threesome ($300) or foursome ($400).

Sponsors for the Blue-Gold Golf Outing are still being accepted. Sponsorships are available for as little as $100 and as much as $4,500 for the outing’s title sponsorship.

After the Blue-Gold Golf Outing, an Athletics Reunion Dinner is planned at the Lutheran Heritage Room at 5 p.m. The dinner is free to those who register. An Athletics Post-Reception is also planned at the Gallery Grille at 8 p.m.

Saturday festivities will begin with a free continental breakfast at 8 a.m., for those who register, in the state-of-the-art James Pedas Communication Center. Following breakfast, Director of Athletics Jack Leipheimer ’74, along with other College administrators and coaches, will lead a campus athletics update which will include a presentation and a question-and-answer session. Campus tours, which will depart from the James Pedas Communication Center, will begin after the campus athletics update.

Thiel College will break ground on its track & field complex, located near the baseball field, at 11:30 a.m. President Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D. and Leipheimer will comment on the importance and impact of the track & field complex. Lunch will be provided for those who register after the groundbreaking ceremony.

A Hall of Fame Pre-reception, including cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, will take place from 3-4 p.m. Saturday at the Rotunda Bistro inside the Howard Miller Student Center. The Thiel College Athletic 35th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at the Lutheran Heritage Room beginning at 4 p.m. The 35th induction class includes: John Castaldo ’70 (football), Randy Chiquelin ’03 (baseball), Tracy (Henderson) Orner ’01 (softball, basketball, track & field), Jim Kick ’82 (football) and longtime wrestling coach Mark Vennis.

During the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, a historic commitment to the wrestling program will also be celebrated when Thiel Athletic Hall of Fame member Rod Wilt '86 and his wife Jill (Gardner) Wilt '85 are recognized for making the largest donation to any single athletic program in Thiel College history. In recognition of the gift, the head wrestling coach position at Thiel College will be endowed. It is the first endowed coaching position in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and the first at Thiel College.

“This is a perfect opportunity to come back to campus to see all the impressive changes, participate in the Blue-Gold Golf Outing, reconnect with old friends and witness five very deserving former Tomcats become a part of the Thiel Athletic Hall of Fame,” Smith said.

Free on-campus housing is available throughout the Thiel College Athletics Reunion Weekend for those who register. Housing check in is scheduled for Friday, May 29 from 3:30-6 p.m. and check out is Sunday, May 31 by 11 a.m.

The deadline to register for the Blue-Gold Golf Outing and the Thiel College Athletic 35th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is May 10.
