Thiel College alumnus and GNC executive to be recognized at season-opening football game

GREENVILLE, Pa.—General Nutrition Corporation Vice President for International Development and Thiel College graduate Shawn Cupples ’87 will be the Game Day Honoree for Saturday’s season-opening football game.

Thiel hosts Alfred (N.Y.) University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Alumni Stadium.

“Shawn has been an outstanding supporter of Thiel and its athletic programs since his graduation,” Thiel College Vice President for Advancement Roberta Leonard said. “It is an honor to launch this season’s Game Day honoree series with an accomplished professional and alumnus who exemplifies the lasting connection that our alumni have with the Thiel community.”

During his four-year tenure on the football team, he earned second-team all-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors in his senior season as an offensive lineman. At Thiel, he majored in business administration and accounting. Cupples participated in many philanthropic endeavors as a student in groups such as Les Lauries and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

Cupples is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He resides in Pittsburgh and has worked with GNC since 1994, working his way up through financial and developmental avenues. His work has led him around the world.

Along with this distinction, the Tomcats new head coach Mike Winslow ’04 will be coaching his first game with Thiel.

The Game Day Honoree program recognizes at halftime of each home football game members of the Thiel College community and the region for their contributions.
