GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College announces Kaitlyn Schmidt ’25, of Monroeville, Pa., and Owen Trumbull ’25, of Lottsville, Pa., as its Student of the Month honorees for October.
The Student of the Month honor is awarded to seniors. It is among the most prestigious student awards at Thiel College with only six students earning the honor each semester.
Schmidt is a math major and is seeking a secondary education certification. She is a 2021 graduate of Plum Senior High School and plans to get a middle or high school teaching position after graduation.
Schmidt is a member of the Dietrich Honors Institute, Sigma Tau Delta (English honors society) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is Vice President of Kappa Delta Pi (education honors society), Vice President of Kappa Mu Epsilon (mathematics honors society) and is in her third year as captain of the Thiel cheerleading team. She also works as a peer tutor for math courses.
She is the daughter of Kimberly and Robert Schmidt, of Monroeville, Pa.
“Thiel College has provided me with countless memories and growth through my academic studies, which fostered intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. Additionally, the athletic community and small campus community have helped me build lasting friendships and cultivate valuable life lessons that can be applicable after graduation,” Schmidt said.
Professor of English Mary Theresa Hall, Ph.D.; Associate Professor of Education Calli Shekell, Ph.D. and Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Jie Wu, Ph.D. have each been meaningful mentors to her, she said.
“They assisted in my academic studies, but also, my personal growth inside and outside of the classroom,” Schmidt said. “I would also like to recognize Coach Randall Burnett for being a mentor for my athletic success with the cheerleading team at Thiel. Throughout my Thiel career, we have created a friendship through the love and passion we have for the sport of cheerleading.”
Trumbull is an environmental science major and a 2021 graduate of Eisenhower High School.
After graduation he plans to pursue a career with a governmental agency such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where he has held an internship position for the past three summers.
In his local community, he helps with elections. Trumbull has assisted in public outreach programs regarding water safety to various school students around his area.
“I would like to thank my family and God for helping me during my time at Thiel. My time in college has been full of good times and hard times,” Trumbull said. “If it were not for my family being readily available to help me in my academic efforts it’s very possible that the bad times could have easily outweighed the good, but this was not the case thanks to the love they showed me each and every day.”
He is the son of Mark and Wendy Trumbull, of Lottsville, Pa.
“Thiel College has turned me into a well-rounded individual as I have experienced a variety of encounters that have taught me plenty of valuable life lessons. Thiel provided me with an opportunity to further my academics as well as my athletic career. The three seasons I participated in football were full of memories that I will cherish for life,” Trumbull said. “Through football I (built) relationships with not only my teammates, but also my classmates and faculty that will last well after graduation. I am truly blessed to have been part of the all-encompassing community that Thiel is comprised of.”
Trumbull said he would like to recognize Professor of Environmental Science Anna Reinsel, Ph.D. ’06 for the “positive influence she had on me during my time at Thiel.”
“Dr. Reinsel is not only a wonderful instructor, but also an amazing human being. The love and compassion that she shows her students each and every day is something that should not be taken for granted,” Trumbull said. “She is always willing to help her students around the clock regardless of whether it is an academic or life problem. She has a way of teaching class that turns learning into a fun and interactive activity. The work that she puts in to make education and Thiel College a better place does not fly under the radar. Dr. Reinsel undoubtedly makes a very beneficial and fond impact on the lives of the students she comes in contact with, and I am blessed to say I was one of these very lucky students.”
