GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College announces the addition of Kristin M. Carlson, Ph.D., as assistant professor of languages and chair of the Department of Languages.
Carlson was a lecturer at Purdue University in 2014 and 2015, and graduate lecturer from 2009-2014 at Purdue. She received her B.A. in Spanish literature from Rider University (N.J.) and earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish linguistics from Purdue University.
“Kristin Carlson is superbly prepared to assist our students in achieving proficiency in the language of their choice and in understanding the value-added for careers, travel, and personal fulfillment afforded by proficiency in another language and culture,” Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Lynn Franken, Ph.D., said.
Her article “The Phonetic Output of Word-internal, Post-nuclear /l/ and /ɾ/ Weakening in Havana Cuban Spanish” is being reviewed as a chapter for the book, “Contemporary Approaches to Cuban Spanish Dialectology.” She also had her article “An Acoustic and Perceptual Analysis of Compensatory Processes in Vowels Preceding Deleted Post-nuclear /s/ in Andalusian Spanish” published in the journal, Concentric: Studies in Linguistics. The refereed, international journal is produced by the Department of English at National Taiwan Normal University.
Carlson recently completed the American English Institute Global Teacher Training Program and is certified as an American English Institute instructor. She studied Spanish literature and culture at La Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain. Carlson has also traveled to Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, France, Spain, Germany and Austria.
