GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College welcomed Martin Black as Associate Dean for Career Development, a position he began in July. Prior to his appointment at Thiel College, Black was the assistant dean for career development at Brandeis University's Heller School in Waltham, Mass. He also worked as director of career services and then director of employee relations at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College in Pittsburgh.

“Martin's impressive experience in university career services coupled with his enthusiasm, insight and penchant for hard work will ensure that Thiel’s career preparation for all students, beginning on day one and lasting through the alumni years, becomes a hallmark of the Thiel Commitment and a model for others to emulate,” said Lynn Franken, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.

Black earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Albany, an A.B.D. in German Area Studies from New York University. He worked abroad for two years before returning to the U.S. and two decades of service for New York-based companies and organizations as a teacher, editor, cross-cultural trainer and program manager. A published author and translator, he has presented widely on experiential learning.

“Many things in this life can be accomplished by consensus, but very little without resistance,” said Black. “Skippering one’s direction, authoring one’s narrative, in short, developing one’s career: this is an individual task of self-realization and must be directed from within.”

As Associate Dean of Career Development, Black will be responsible for career-related outreach to students, alumni and employers; set the calendar for on and off-campus career events; manage external partnerships with employers and peer colleges; and evaluate and build office resources in response to evolving student needs. The Career Development Center will advise students across all majors and career interests.
