GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College was recently awarded an additional $225,000 from the Marion G. Resch Foundation to help fund science-based and other scholarships at the College.
Marion G. Resch Science Scholarships are exclusive to home-schooled students and students from high schools in the Ohio counties of Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull who graduate six months before their first semester at Thiel College. Scholarships are in addition to any other merit or institutional awards. To bolster interest in the natural and physical sciences, 50 percent of all available Resch Science Scholarships are provisionally reserved for women.
“We are grateful to the Marion G. Resch Foundation for its continued support of Thiel College, specifically, and education and opportunity generally,” Thiel College Vice President for Advancement Roberta Leonard said. “The foundation’s support has opened doors for students across the region.”
The award also has funds earmarked for a summer enrichment camp for students from Youngstown, Ohio. Graduates of the four-year camp program also receive continuing scholarship funds if they choose to attend Thiel College.
More than 80 Mahoning Valley high school graduates have benefited from the scholarship since its inception in 2006. The scholarship is named in memory of the late philanthropist Marion G. Resch, a respected member of the Mahoning Valley community. During her lifetime, she always held education in special regard, and true to her legacy; the Marion G. Resch Foundation is committed to promoting the education of young people throughout the Mahoning Valley, Leonard said.
Students qualifying for a Marion G. Resch Scholarship must plan to enroll as a full-time student in biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, physics, communication sciences and disorders, secondary education in science, neuroscience, or an affiliated pre-professional program at Thiel College.
The scholarships are part of more than $100 million in aid that has been awarded at Thiel College since 2009.
