International piano virtuoso performing free concert at Thiel College’s Con Spirito series

GREENVILLE, Pa.— Alexander Gavrylyuk, a virtuosic pianist and Steinway artist, will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at the Thiel College’s David Johnson Memorial Chapel as part of the College’s Con Spirito Chamber Music Series.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Gavrylyuk has received international critical acclaim for his “electrifying and poetic performances.”

“Alexander Gavrylyuk is, easily, the most compelling pianist of his generation,” Australian concert pianist Roger Woodward said.

Born in 1984, he began piano studies at seven years old and gave his first concerto performance when he was nine.  By 2005, Gavrylyuk had won first-prize awards at the Horowitz and the Hamamatsu International Piano Competitions, as well as the Gold Award and Best Performance of a Classical Concerto at the renowned Arthur Rubenstein International Piano Masters Competition. He is increasingly in demand by orchestras for his compelling interpretations appearing with the New York, Los Angeles, Czech, Israel, Warsaw and Moscow philharmonic orchestras, and collaborated with world-class conductors. He has performed with all the major orchestras in Australia, makes frequent visits to Japan and Asia, and returns to Russia on a regular basis performing with Russian orchestras as well as his renowned solo recital programs.

Gavrylyuk’s highlights for the 2018-2019 season include debuts with the Chicago Symphony and Wiener Symphoniker, return visits to the Sydney Symphony and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and solo recital appearances in Europe, Asia, America, Stockholm, Munich, Zurich, London, Amsterdam and Vienna.  He is Artist in Residence at Chautauqua Institution (N.Y.), supports a number of charities including Theme and Variations Young Pianist Trust which supports aspiring Australian pianists, and Opportunity Cambodia which built a residential educational facility for Cambodian children.

He lives in the Netherlands with his wife and two daughters.

About the Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series

The series has hosted free concerts that are open to the public on the Thiel campus in Greenville since 2007. This is the second event of the 2018-2019 concert series. The Dorian Wind Quintet will perform the final event of the 2018-2019 series on March 29, 2019. The first concert of the year was the Fischoff Award Winning Donald Sinta Quartet in September.

In 2007, the tradition of musical excellence started when LaVonne H’16 and the late Glen R. Johnson H’88, in honor of their late daughter, created the series to bring top musical talent to Thiel College and the region. Con Spirito is just one of the offerings at Thiel that connects the college to the regional arts community. The Weyers-Sampson Art Gallery hosts about four exhibits annually. The exhibits and gallery talks include the works of regional and national artists as well as pieces from Thiel College’s private collection.
