Five Thiel College students nominated for national college broadcasting awards

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Five Thiel College media students have been nominated for Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards and among the students attending this year’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s 79th Annual Conference held at New York City’s Hotel Pennsylvania on March 1—3.

The yearly student media conference hosts more than 2,000 high school and college students from across the country and is completed with IBS’ National Golden Mic Awards ceremony. The conference consists of breakout workshops, lectures, hands-on technology trials, practices, and other sessions that cover various media-oriented topics like public relations, promotions, script writing and more.

For the fifth consecutive year, Thiel College’s radio station, WXTC, has been nominated for Golden Mic Awards. WXTC is recognized in the comedy and news and sports categories. Students involved in both WXTC and TCTV platforms are participating in the three-day conference. Thiel’s IBS nominees are Bailey Smith ’20, Talia Jackson ’21 and Kira Snyder ’19 (comedy) for Friday Night Gurus; Talia Jackson ’21 and Danielle Wiseman ’20 (news) for WXTC’s News at 6 and Shane Young ’19 for College Radio Sports Director of the Year.

  • Jackson, of Meadville, Pa., is a media journalism major and a 2017 graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School.
  • Smith, of Carnegie, Pa., is a biology major and a 2016 graduate of Chartiers Valley High School.
  • Snyder, of Houston, Pa., is a religion major and a 2013 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.
  • Wiseman, of Washington, Pa., is a media journalism, television, radio and online media major and a 2014 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School.
  • Young, of Sharon, Pa., is a media communication major and a 2015 Sharon High School.

According to IBS, the organization received more than 2,700 submissions of student media for the Golden Mic competition. Thiel students are among nominees from other institutions, such as Hofstra University, Cal-State San Diego, Kent State University, Gannon University and The College of William and Mary. This year’s keynote speaker is Scott Hopek, President of iHeart Radio’s NYC division. Other highlights include organized tours of iconic New York City media outlets such as SIRUS/FM Studios, NBC Studios and NYC’s famed Times Square.
