Deets joins Department of Psychology as tenure track faculty member

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Assistant Professor of Psychology Shannon Deets, Ph.D., has joined the Thiel College faculty as a tenure track professor this academic year, after spending 2014-15 as a visiting professor.

“The Psychology Department is delighted to have Dr. Shannon Deets transition over from her role as a visiting professor last academic year to the tenure track this fall. Her clinical expertise will continue to serve our majors well as they prepare for careers in the counseling professions,” said Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Department of Psychology Laura Pickens, Ph.D. ’06. “Additionally, her unique research interest in understanding the effect of authentic movement through dance on consciousness can provide a refreshing breadth of knowledge for our majors.”

Deets’ research into dance’s effect on the brain was one of six summer research projects that were part of the inaugural Greenville Neuromodulation Center (GNC) Faculty/Student Research Institute.

“We look forward to her continued contributions to the Thiel College academic community both in and out of the classroom,” Pickens said.

Deets has Bachelor of Science from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. with a major in biology. She completed her master’s in community counseling and her doctorate in counseling psychology at Gannon University in Erie, Pa. She is a licensed professional counselor and has completed additional training in psychotherapy, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnotherapy and a variety of types of play therapy.

Deets is joined by seven other new full-time professors at Thiel College this year.
