Deckinger, Shingler named Thiel College Student of the Month honorees for February

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College announces Katrina Deckinger ’22, of Donegal, Pa., and Jakob Shingler ’22, of Pittsburgh, as the Student of the Month honorees for February.

The Student of the Month honor is awarded to seniors. It is among the most prestigious student awards at Thiel College with only six students each semester earning the honor.

Deckinger is pursuing a degree in biochemistry and a minor in medical biology. She is president of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates, vice president of the Women Inspiring the Next Generation club, treasurer of the College’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success, a member of the neuroscience club, a member of the biology honor society Beta Beta Beta, and an editorial board member of the College’s undergraduate research journal, The Lectern. She participated in the 2021 University of Pittsburgh McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine summer school, and she has served as a firefighter with the Chestnut Ridge Community Volunteer Fire Company in Stahlstown, Pa.

Deckinger is a 2018 graduate of Mount Pleasant Area Senior High School. Following graduation, she plans to apply for graduate school to earn a master’s degree in biomedical sciences. She is the daughter of Keith and Marsha Deckinger, of Donegal, Pa.

Shingler is pursuing a major in environmental science and a minor in theatre. He is the sports director for the campus radio station, WXTC, an active member of the Thiel Players, and has worked as an employee for the Langenheim Memorial Library for several years. He participates in several clubs on campus, including the Outdoor Recreation Club, Neuroscience Club, Ultimate Club, and Environmental Club. He is a member of the Phi Theta Phi fraternity in which he previously served as pledge educator and ritualist.

Shingler has worked for several years for Tree Pittsburgh, a non-profit organization in Pittsburgh. He was recently a landscape intern during the summer of 2021 for Chatham University Eden Hall in Gibsonia, Pa. Shingler is a 2018 graduate of the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy high school. Following graduation, he plans to find a job in the field of environmental science. He is the son of Scott Shingler and Tawnya Ramazzotti, of Pittsburgh.
