GREENVILLE, Pa.-- As an expedition team begins investigating a possible discovery of Amelia Earhart H’32’s long-missing aircraft on a remote Pacific island, Thiel College is highlighting its historical and personal connections to the pioneering aviator, who received an honorary degree from the College in 1932.

Members of the Taraia Object expedition arrived on Nikumaroro in the Republic of Kiribati on Oct. 12 and began setting up equipment and operations on Oct. 13 to investigate an underwater anomaly that researchers believe could be the remains of Earhart’s plane. The 17-person expedition is a joint effort involving the Archaeological Legacy Institute, Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University.

The investigation follows the release of satellite imagery suggesting that an object in the lagoon could be Earhart’s aircraft, which disappeared during her attempted flight around the world in 1937. Researchers have not confirmed the object’s identity.

The renewed search carries particular significance at Thiel College, where Earhart received an honorary Doctor of Science degree on Dec. 11, 1932. The recognition followed a remarkable year in which Earhart received the National Geographic Society’s gold medal, presented by President Herbert Hoover, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Earhart’s father, Edwin Earhart 1886, graduated from Thiel in 1886, and her aunt, Kate Earhart, also attended the College and was present for the honorary degree ceremony.

In his book “The Search for Amelia Earhart,” author Fred Goerner wrote, “The most satisfying recognition, however, came from her father's alma mater, Thiel College of Greenville, Pennsylvania, in the form of an honorary Doctor of Science degree.”

Thiel’s connection to Earhart also extends to a current member of its athletic department. Director of Track and Field Jessi Juarez recently discovered she is a distant cousin of the pioneering aviator after her sister uncovered the family connection while conducting genealogical research.

“It was a surprise to learn that Amelia Earhart is part of our family history,” Juarez said. “She was a remarkable woman who challenged expectations and inspired generations of people to pursue their dreams. It’s exciting to have that personal connection, especially knowing she also has a place in Thiel College's history.”

Earhart's influence at Thiel extends beyond her honorary degree and family connections. During her visit to campus, she delivered a keynote address and expressed her affection for the College and its mission.

Inspired by her advocacy for women’s rights and education, Thiel students formed a women’s organization in her honor. Members met with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and raised approximately $48,000 in 1940 to promote opportunities for women on campus. The organization’s influence continues through student groups that support women's leadership and causes.

As researchers begin their investigation on Nikumaroro, the expedition represents another chapter in the decadeslong effort to determine what happened to Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan during their ill-fated flight. For Thiel College, the renewed attention also offers an opportunity to reflect on the pioneering aviator's enduring connection to the institution.
