GREENVILLE, Pa.-- With two books published, plans for an NBC television series based on one of his books and a long list of academic credentials, Sandeep Jauhar, M.D., already had an impressive resume. Now Jauhar, who will be speaking at Thiel College’s second annual Haer Family Symposium at 7 p.m. March 30, can add online journalist to his list of accomplishments.

Jauhar is one of the 20 new online-focused writers The New York Times added as contributors for its op-ed and Sunday Review sections, editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal and op-ed/Sunday Review editor Trish Hall announced Wednesday.

Jauhar is a cardiologist in New York and the author, most recently, of “Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician.” Jauhar also wrote “Intern: A Doctor’s Initiation,” which was optioned by NBC for a dramatic series. He has been a contributor for The New York Times for more than a decade and also has written essays for The New England Journal of Medicine, Slate, New York magazine and The Los Angeles Times. He has appeared frequently on CNN, ABC, Bloomberg and National Public Radio. He was an American Association for the Advancement of Science Mass Media Fellow at Time magazine and the recipient of a South Asian Journalists Special recognition award for outstanding stories about medicine.

His presentation at Thiel is free and open to the public. It opens the symposium in the Howard Miller Student Center’s Lutheran Heritage Room on the Thiel campus. The event features distinguished professionals speaking about healthcare issues.

Douglas E. Hough, Ph.D., associate scientist and Associate Director of the Master in Healthcare Management program in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, is author of “Irrationality in Health Care: What Behavioral Economics Reveals About What We Do and Why.” He will present at 7 p.m. March 31 also in the Lutheran Heritage Room.

The Haer Family Symposium takes its name from Thiel alumni Fred ’65 and Jill ’66 Haer, whose various companies have advanced neuroscientific research and helped to develop new neurological and psychiatric therapies. And, true to the College’s mission, the Haers have created opportunities for Thiel students to grow as learners and citizens.
