American Brass Quintet to perform at Thiel College

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Thiel College presents the American Brass Quintet in concert at the David Johnson Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Now in its 51st season, the American Brass Quintet has been internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles and an icon in the brass world. The ABQ’s rich history includes performances in Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and all 50 of the United States; a discography of more than 50 recordings; and the premieres of more than 100 contemporary brass works. The group will host a mini-residency at Thiel from March 20 to 22, which will offer Thiel’s student musicians an intense chamber music experience.

The group’s members include Raymond Mase (trumpet), Kevin Cobb (trumpet), David Wakefield (horn), Michael Powell (trombone) and John D. Rojak (bass trombone). They will perform pieces by Erasmus Widmann, Osvaldo Lacerda, David Sampson, Ludwig Maurer, Josquin de Pres and Joan Tower.

The American Brass Quintet is the 10th concert of Thiel’s Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series, which began in fall 2007. Con Spirito presents concerts each year, featuring top chamber music groups from across the country. The series was created in honor of the late daughter of Dr. Glen Johnson H’88, Thiel College Board of Trustees chairman emeritus, and his wife, LaVonne, generous friends of the college. The home of the Con Spirito Chamber Music Concert Series is the David Johnson Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 2006 and named in honor of the Johnsons’ late son.
