David M. Miller Distinguished Lecture Series

The Professor David M. Miller '61, H'20 Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 2021 through a generous gift from Dr. Jagdish N. Sheth and Mrs. Madhu Sheth to honor and memorialize the late Professor Miller’s 57-year career as an educator at Thiel College. Lectures are open to the campus and extended communities and are intended to serve as a cornerstone for scholarly events at Thiel.

Rear Admiral Richard Childs, M.D. - Assistant United States Surgeon General and Scientific Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Thiel College is delighted to welcome Rear Admiral Richard Childs, Scientific Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as the 2024 Professor David M. Miller '61, H'20 Distinguished Lecture speaker. Dr. Childs has been an active duty officer in the United States Commissioned Corps since 1995. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 2015 and in 2020 received his 2nd star, and currently serves as an Assistant United States Surgeon General.

Rear Admiral (RADM) Richard Childs also serves as the Scientific Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He graduated from Georgetown University and Georgetown University Medical School. He completed his internship, residency, and a Chief Residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville followed by fellowships in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH, and Hematology at the NHLBI, NIH. He was the first investigator to show that metastatic kidney cancer could be cured by transplanted allogeneic immune cells through a graft-vs-tumor effect, a seminal discovery that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Rear Admiral Childs is scheduled to present in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the HMSC at 7:00pm on April 22nd, 2024 as part of the David M. Miller '61, H'20 Distinguished Lecture Series.
