ART 101
Art History, Pre-History to 1800
A chronological history of art surveying the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and up to the beginning of the 19th century. Emphasis will be given to painting and sculpture with consideration given to the influences of invention, technological advances, social structure, and religion. The course will include major contributions made by European and American cultures with emphasis given to international aspects and cross-cultural influences such as Japanese, African, and Mexican.

Drawing Still Life and Landscape
This is a drawing course designed to teach the student basic to intermediate level drawing skills. This course will emphasize drawing from observation with an introduction to great drawings through the ages. The subjects to be studied in-depth are the still life and landscape. The structure of the course is based on experiential learning and practice. Concepts or themes to be investigated in this course as it relates to drawing are line, shape, value, texture, composition, and linear perspective. A variety of media will be explored such as graphite, charcoal, and ink. Lab Fee $75.

Painting Still Life & Landscape
This is a painting course designed to teach the student basic to intermediate level painting skills. This course will emphasize painting from observation with an introduction to great painting through the ages. The subjects to be studied in-depth are the still life and landscape. The structure of the course is based on experiential learning and practice. Concepts or themes to be investigated in this course as it relates to painting are value, color, composition, linear and atmospheric perspective. Lab Fee $100.

Modern Art History
An examination of the development of modern art through the study of painting and sculpture beginning at the 17th century and continuing to the present time. The course will include major contributions made by European and American cultures with emphasis given to international aspects and cross-cultural influences such as Japanese, African, and Mexican.

Drawing Anatomy
An introduction to Artistic Human Anatomy and life drawing. Drawing from observation will be emphasized as well as studying great figure drawings from the past. This course is open to all majors. It will additionally benefit students in Biology, Exercise Science and Health Services, where Anatomy is a requirement. The course will provide practical, clinically applicable skills, improving a student’s ability to draw and communicate pictorially, whether it be surmounting language and literacy barriers during patient consultation, or furnishing clinical notes with more accurate illustrations. In addition to the development of drawing skills, wider benefits of the course include increased observational skills and a better understanding of human anatomy. The course also aims to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of great figurative art. No prerequisite. Lab Fee $75.

Drawing: Cartooning & Caricature
This is a drawing course designed to teach the student basic to intermediate level drawing skills. The subject to be studied in-depth is the human figure. The structure of the course is based on experiential learning and practice. Concepts or themes to be investigated in this course as it relates to drawing are line, shape, value, texture, composition. Emphasis will be placed on drawing people through cartooning and caricature. A variety of media will be explored such as graphite, charcoal, and ink. Lab Fee: $75.

Printmaking
This is a course intended to introduce printmaking techniques to the beginning art student. The course will introduce methods of printmaking including relief printing and intaglio. Emphasis will be placed on technical proficiency and concept development. The course will also introduce multi-color and edition printing. Special emphasis will be placed on studio practices required in a communal working environment. The instructor will also introduce printmaking in a historical context through slide lectures and demonstration presentations. Lab Fee $100.
