Sharon G. Flake, award-winning author of ‘The Skin I’m In,’ speaking at Thiel College

GREENVILLE, Pa.—Award-winning author Sharon Flake, whose first book “The Skin I’m In” is internationally recognized and has 1.5 million copies in print on six continents, will speak at the College’s Common Hour at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25 in Stamm Lecture Hall, James Pedas Communication Center.

Flake is widely celebrated for her contributions to literature, with her renowned work “The Skin I’m In” resonating with readers globally. The novel, which addresses issues of self-esteem, identity, and social acceptance, has garnered critical acclaim and is considered a modern classic. The book is used in classrooms worldwide and studied by experts in the field of education and literature. Flake is the author of over a dozen books. Her work has been translated into multiple languages including Korean, Italian, French and Portuguese. Her contribution to the field of literature has been recognized with several Coretta Scott King Author Honors; an NAACP Award Nomination; the YWCA Racial Justice Award, and numerous top-ten best books for teens citations by libraries and industry organizations. Flake is also Kirkus Prize Award finalist. Her latest book, “Once In A Blue Moon” is a historical novel about an eleven-year-old boy with anxiety and a big imagination.

During the Common Hour event, Flake will share insights into her literary journey, discuss the themes explored in “The Skin I’m In,” and engage with the audience through a thought-provoking discussion.

The event is free and open to the public. Members of the media, students, faculty, and the public are invited to attend this special Common Hour event.

Flake’s latest novel, “The Life I’m In,” was a 2021 finalist for one of the most prestigious honors in literature, the Kirkus Prize. It was also named a Top 10 book of the year by the American Library Association and Kirkus.
