Thiel College reading groups will focus on diversity and inclusion topics

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College is forming faculty and staff reading groups that will meet throughout the spring 2019 semester to discuss diversity and inclusion at the College.

Also, as part of the focus on diversity and civility, the College will send a team of faculty representatives to the 2019 Institute for Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts in Atlanta, Ga. in June. The institute will focus on establishing plans that will give Thiel College faculty, staff and administrators strategies to improve diversity and civility among members of the College community. The campus reading groups will have a similar structure to the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education groups that were formed last fall. These groups will discuss readings that involve a wide range of topics related to the concepts of diversity and inclusion, such as race, sex and gender, religion and free speech as they pertain to the community at Thiel College.

Last spring, Thiel College was awarded a prestigious grant from the Council of Independent Colleges, an association in which independent liberal arts colleges and universities seek to heighten aspects of leadership, high-quality education and societal contributions among the institutions involved.

The Institute for Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts will take place in June of 2019 and aims to expand college students’ understandings of social issues that occur on campuses. They accomplish this by sharing works submitted by experts in the humanities and social sciences fields with faculty members of these institutions.
