GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Thiel College community will recognize and celebrate student research and scholarship at its annual Scholarship and Arts Symposium, held across campus on April 20.
The Symposium will feature multimedia presentations, oral presentations, digital posters, and Dietrich Honors Institute thesis presentations. Students from all majors will present their research on a variety of topics, ranging from sports and mental health to rodent brain experiments. A student art show will also be held throughout the day in the Weyers-Sampson Gallery, located in the Howard Miller Student Center.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. providing a welcome and opening remarks in Bly Hall of the Academic Center. Following this, a morning session will run from 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., following a brief intermission for lunch. Professor of English and Department Chair Jared Johnson, Ph.D. will give the keynote address in Stamm Lecture Hall of the James Pedas Communication Center at 1 p.m., presenting his research, “Launching Scholars: Research and the Tomcat Way.” The Symposium will conclude in Stamm Hall with the presentation of the Library Research and Writing Awards and a closing reception at 4 p.m.
The Scholarship and Arts Symposium at Thiel College has its roots in a college-wide Research Symposium initially held in 2014. As a part of the annual celebration of research and scholarship, students from all majors present their academic research and art to the College community. Each year, the symposium features a keynote address from a faculty member, highlighting the scholarly work and research that they conduct beyond their duties as an educator at Thiel. No classes are held during this day-long recognition of student scholarship and research.
