Thiel College: A Relationship-Rich Institution

In an era where the value of higher education is increasingly scrutinized, institutions like Thiel College must articulate what sets us apart. The answer, for Thiel, is clear: we are a relationship-rich institution.

A growing body of research underscores the significance of personal connections in education. In “Relationship-Rich Education,” authors Peter Felton and Leo Lambert explore how meaningful associations between students, faculty, and staff drive academic success, resilience, and post-graduate achievement. Their findings align with what we have long known at Thiel: education is most impactful when it is personal.

The cliche is of the professor who sees the classroom as the only thing that matters, but the reality is far different at small, personal places like Thiel College. Here, faculty extend their care and mentorship beyond coursework. For example, Ryan Harcourt ’25 navigated the challenge of becoming a new father while staying in school.

“My daughter was born during the Spring 2024 semester. It truly was a memorable moment for me, and my professors were very understanding and flexible,” said the senior health systems major who is planning to enter Thiel’s graduate program in physician assistant studies. “In my opinion, the close connections between the faculty and students are one of the best things about this institution.”

For senior football player Justin Logan â€™25, Thiel became more than a place of study—it became a foundation of lifelong friendships.

“The past four years have been something to remember for the rest of my life,” the senior media and journalism major said. “The connections and brothers I’ve made along the way are something I’ll hold with me forever.”

Similarly, Grace Jones ’25, M.S. ’27 found the support of both friends and faculty transformative. “Thiel provided me with a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with passionate peers and supportive professors in which I gained one-of-a-kind experience.”

These stories illustrate what it means to be a relationship-rich institution. Education extends far beyond the classroom; it is woven into the very fabric of our community. One meaningful connection can change the trajectory of a student’s journey. Our faculty members serve as mentors, our alumni network offers career guidance, and our staff members provide essential support structures. Whether in academic advising, athletics, campus ministry, or student life, Thiel fosters an ecosystem where connections are not just encouraged but ingrained in the culture.

At a time when some places struggle with impersonal learning environments and student disengagement, Thiel College embraces its ability to provide something different. Our commitment to relationship-rich education is not just an ideal—it is a defining feature of the Thiel experience.

As we look to the future, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering relationships that empower students, prepare them for meaningful careers, and enrich their lives. Higher education is about more than earning a degree; it is about becoming part of a community that shapes and supports individuals for a lifetime.
