Vormelker, Brewer awarded Student of the Month honors for December

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College announces Phillip Brewer ’19, of Cortland, Ohio, and Jessica Vormelker ’19, of Orwell, Ohio, have earned Student of the Month honors for December.

The Student of the Month is awarded to seniors. It is among the most prestigious student awards at Thiel College, with only about six students each semester earning the honor.

Brewer is earning a dual major in religion and theology/youth ministry with a minor in equine studies. He is a member of the Thiel Tomcats Marching Pride, the equestrian team, David Johnson Memorial Chapel staff, the Thiel Student Support Network, and the Lutheran Student Movement. He is a member of Chi Alpha Epsilon national honor society, Theta Alpha Kappa national religion honor society, and Pi Nu Epsilon national music honor society. He has earned Dean’s List recognition for six consecutive semesters.

After graduation, Brewer intends to attend graduate school and earn a master’s degree in religious studies.

Brewer, a 2014 graduate of Pymatuning Valley High School, is the son of Angela and Phillip L. Brewer, of Cortland, Ohio.

Vormelker is an early childhood and special education major. She is Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president, a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference student-athlete advisory committee, a Kappa Delta Pi officer, and a member of Thiel College's Relay for Life team. She is a leader for a bible study that meets once a week, a resident assistant, and works with the Sports Information Department. She is a member of Les Lauriers, scholarship, leadership and service honorary society, and Chi Alpha Sigma, national college athlete honor society.

A member of the women’s basketball team, Vormelker is the all-time leader for 3-point shots made at Thiel College for both men and women and a 1,000-point scorer. She was an All-PAC honorable mention in her first and sophomore years, an All-PAC second team member in her junior year, and a finalist for the Salem, Va. Josten’s Trophy for the 2017-2018 season.

Vormelker volunteers with Akron Hope, a non-profit that works with underprivileged youth. She also helps run a basketball tournament for the Chad Effect of Chicagoland, raising money for underprivileged youth in the Chicago area. The Chad Effect was established by Vormelker’s family in honor of the passing of her cousin, 20-year-old Chad Cooke.

Vormelker, a 2014 graduate of Grand Valley High School, is the daughter of Steve and Kelley Vormelker, of Orwell, Ohio. She plans on obtaining a master’s degree through a graduate assistant position following graduation.
