Thiel College hosting Pennsylvania DCNR workshop on “Caring for the Woods”

GREENVILLE, Pa.-- Thiel College is hosting a workshop led by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to help residents learn about and care for the land around them on Saturday, January 21 in the Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

The “Caring for the Woods” workshop is from 8 a.m. to noon and will feature speakers from both the state department of conservation and natural resources and regional environmentally-focused companies. designed so that woodland owners, homeowners, and anyone interested in their local environment can learn about the land around them and how to care for it.

The Keynote Speaker for the event is Fred Zelt. He is the founder of Earth Science Excursions, LLC, a Pittsburgh-based company that creates and leads geology-themed hikes and bike rides.

10 a.m. Breakout Session 1: "How to Conduct a Timber Harvest" Mark Lewis, DCNR Bureau of Forestry, or "Tips for Planting a Successful Yard Tree" Jessica Pierce, DCNR Bureau of Forestry

11 a.m. Breakout Session 2: "Proactive Steps to Increase the Health and Resilience of your Woodlot" Dave Cole, DCNR Bureau of Forestry, or "Planting for Pollinators and Beneficial Insects" Mark Fiely, Ersnt Conservation Seeds
