Katie Swain was the featured speaker for the Entrepreneurship Seminar Class on September 11. Swain is a founder and Executive Director of Brown Horse Projects a non-profit which primarily provides medical services to people living in Haiti.
Kaite Swain runs Brown Horse Project which is a non-profit organization. This company started in 2011 by making inspirational quotes on a shirt, inspired by funny quotes on the shirt. However, hers was to spread positivity through scripture. Emily Ripple ’26
Katie stated that “providing a small amount of encouragement can show love and improve someone’s day”. She then discussed how the Brown Horse Project began. It started off with her and a few others making shirts, which included scripture passages on them. 100% of the profit from each shirt sold was donated to charity. Jordan Lang ’25
Katie’s presentation really put things into perspective for me, we take so much for granted as a country. The average salary here is $55,000, and there it is $500. Her presentation was extremely touching, and I really enjoyed getting to hear her story. Casey Yacos ’25
In 2019, the organization opened a permanent medical clinic in Haiti, treating over 12,000 patients annually. Despite facing challenges such as lack of resources and political instability, they have worked in collaboration with local communities to provide consistent care. Seungwoo Baek ’25
The clinic they set up is fully staffed and is open Monday through Friday, while only charging a small fee of $3.80 per visit. Over the last 5 years their clinic has provided medical services to over 30,000 patients. Jordan Lang ’25
Ms. Swain also highlighted how important it is for supporters to stay connected through newsletters and their website, which keeps everyone updated on their efforts and progress. Yianni Panagiotopoulos ’25
As a nonprofit organization, BHP shows how effective resources can provide essential support to those in need. Minseo Kim ’25
Katie’s strength and resilience stood out to me. When she shared the story behind the name “Brown Horse,” it made me realize that even when everything seems to be falling apart, having a pillar of hope—whatever form that may take—can help you push through the toughest times. Lexi Brown ’26
Her contribution to the world deeply moved me and made me realize how beautiful life can be when help others. Overall, it was a great opportunity to reflect on my future through her story. Jahee Lee ’25

Communications collateral
Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.
Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.
Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.
Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.
For more information, email the office.
