Honors Convocation is Friday

The 2022 Academic Honors Convocation will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, April 8 in the William A. Passavant Memorial Center.

This year, student speaker Jamin Wentling ’22, a neuroscience major, will present on “The Undergraduate Arena.”

Special guest, Dan Spence, a community leader, philanthropist, and longtime member of the Thiel community, will also be recognized for his generosity to the college. Spence and his late wife provided the lead gift of $4 million for the renovation of the Academic Center. In honor of his gift, the building will be named in his and his wife’s honor the Dan and Dottie Spence Academic Center.

Academic Honors Convocation has been celebrated at Thiel College annually since 1928. The event marks the academic accomplishments of Thiel College’s top students. Members of the top academic honorary society, Alpha Chi, will be recognized as will the achievements in scholarship, leadership, and innovation by other students.

Tomcat Way presented at Dallas NetVUE conference

President Susan Traverso, Ph.D., Career Development Center director Liza Schaef, Pastor Brian Riddle ’07, and Associate Academic Dean for Student Success Greg Q. Butcher, Ph.D. recently presented the Tomcat Way at the 2022 Network for Vocational Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) conference in Dallas, Texas.

As described by the organizers, “Under the theme ‘Called into Community: Vocation, Engagement, and  Difference,’ the 2022 NetVUE Conference [examined] how attention to vocation and calling can draw us into deep engagement with the needs of the world, meaningful reflection on difference, and more sustained attention to the ways that these issues shape how we, and our students, think about our future directions in life.”

Thiel’s session provided an opportunity to share key aspects of the developmental model with faculty and staff from other NetVUE member schools. A discussion following the session provided the team with helpful feedback that will be incorporated into future work. An article on the Tomcat Way also will be published in a future edition of Intersections, the journal for the network of ELCA Colleges and Universities.

Student News

Norris shares her Thiel story

Margaret “Maggie” Norris ’78 was the featured speaker at the March 30 Ruth A. Miller Senior Business Seminar. Maggie is a principal at Indigo B, LLC in Charlotte, NC and serves on the Thiel College Board of Trustees. In addition to President Susan Traverso, Ph.D. and Kent Taylor, the class also had the privilege of welcoming David M. Miller ’61, H’20 and Ruth A. Miller H’20, in whose honor the seminar is named, Vice President for College Advancement Roberta Leonard and College Archivist John Hauser ’71, H’20.

“Her Thiel story goes as follows: she was a Business Administration and Accounting major, a sister of Sigma Kappa, worked for Prof. David Miller, enjoyed studying in the library, and loves college basketball. Maggie was able to travel abroad thanks to Vira Heinz and work at a bank in London, England. Continuing her Thiel career into today she is a member of the Board of Trustees.” Madeline DePalma ’22

“One question she asked was if anyone lived in Stewart Hall, which I did. It’s crazy to think that I lived in the same building as her about 45 years apart. Because of the size of Thiel, many people who go here over the years seem to have a lot in common with each other.” Kate Sollers ’22

“It was a unique experience to hear her talk about her time at Thiel College and compare it to ours because there are many similarities that are still relevant. She shared with us memories she still carries with her from her time at Thiel. I love hearing stories like this because many do not realize how close-knit of a community Thiel College is, and no matter when you graduated, you all have similar stories to tell.” Maddison Neely ’22

“Mrs. Norris graduated with an Accounting and Business Administration major. After she graduated, she got her CPA and worked at Price Waterhouse in Pittsburgh for a short period of time.” Adonis Scriven ’22

“Maggie decided she was going to move down to North Carolina, she sent her resume to a few banks and got a job at First Union. Maggie was at First Union for 26 years, she switched departments from finance, investors relations, then to operations: mortgage and commercial loans.” Emily Sears ’22

“Maggie became interested in interstate banking and found through her research in the library that North Carolina was leading the way.  She sent her resume and cover letter to the CFO of both First Union and NCNB and was invited to interview with both organizations.  She chose First Union and began a very successful, 26-year career.” Angela Sorg ’23

“My favorite subject Maggie spoke about was when she explained how her career in banking occurred during some of the most impactful problems the world has seen.” Brycen Dorfmeister ’23

“In 2010 she was invited to help recapitalize two small banks that were in bad shape.  They were able to get private equity funds and resurrected them.  They were both bought by a larger bank, and she moved on to her third chapter as a partner in two small businesses.”  Angela Sorg 23

“Now, she finds fulfillment in offering her knowledge, experience, and wisdom as a Fractional Chief Operating Officer to companies that could not find or afford a full-time Chief Operating Officer. Maggie also proudly sits as a member of the Board of Trustees as her alma mater, Thiel College.” Owen Sa ’22

“While Maggie was speaking of her experience during college, she stressed the importance of having an internship, it’s a great way to enter the field, possibly get your first job, and figure out if that is the field you want to go into or not.” Emily Sears ’22

“She expressed to us how essential it is to provide a specialized cover letter when applying for a job to demonstrate to potential employers how you specifically hold the required elements needed to carry out their requested job duties. Maggie told us the significance of arriving in business attire for the interview, asking tough questions during the interview, and collecting business cards or emails to send a thank you note following the interview.” Abigail Cico ’22

“I also learned that we need to be up to date on what’s going on today. More specifically, she gave told us to watch the industry trends, watch the financial markets, and so on so we can be prepared to adapt in our careers.” Adonis Scriven ’22

“I really liked when she talked about taking a chance and moving to North Carolina for a job but knew she had a backup plan just in case her dreams fell through. This has broadened my outlook and made me consider moving to locations away from home for a job and just a chance for success and happiness.” Logan Long ’22

“Maggie said to list all things that can go wrong and how are you going to handle it. Then she said that we will need to have a plan while checking in on the plan to see if you are on schedule. Everyone must be on the same page.” Jacob Zylka ’22

“She gave us the example that they wrote a plan for if there were to ever be a pandemic, how they would handle it if their employees could not show up for work. She expressed how surreal it felt when they had to pull that action plan out when COVID 19 struck.” Maddison Neely ’22

“Norris also spoke about her involvement in her community, she currently has served the last eight years as a board member for Alzheimer’s in South Carolina.” Dan Myers ’22

“Maggie has taught me a valuable lesson about working hard and never giving up. If you constantly improve your work ethic each day you are going to be successful in any career that you choose.” John Retton ’22

“In conclusion, I learned a lot from Ms. Norris because she worked hard for what she has and where she is in the banking industry. Another thing that I found really interesting was that she was always ahead of the industry with finding out what the next big thing was going to be and making sure that she had an understanding of it before other people did.” Alrick Francis ’22

Communications collateral

Employees should update the logos used on institutional materials, including email signatures, letterhead, PowerPoint slides, etc.

Thiel College has used the shield and wordmark combination as the official institutional logo for more than a year. They are the only approved logo for academic co-curricular and institutional use. Additional athletic logo packages are also available.

Email signatures, brand resources, and a job request form are all available online. A Dropbox folder has been set up with instructions and the materials necessary to create new email signatures. Employees can find other Thiel College-branded resources including letterhead, logos and PowerPoint slides in the same folder.

Thiel College community members who need help with communications and marketing initiatives and collateral can now request those services with a job form. The request form is available on the communications and marketing webpage or linked directly below.

For more information, email the office.
