John Barr, M.B.A. ’70 returned to campus to speak to the senior business seminar class of Professor David Miller, M.B.A. ’61. Barr discussed many topics with the students, including why it is important to give back to Thiel College after graduation.
“One life lesson John shared with the class was when interviewing for a job, always show a level of curiosity and show that you are eager to learn. John stated that when he would go through the hiring process during his career, he would look for these qualities in potential candidates. [More] life lessons that he shared with the class that I found extremely beneficial were do not be afraid to take calculated risks and always be kind and respectful.” – Jeffrey Jenkins ’16
“Mr. Barr’s most influential, inspirational words of the night were, ‘it’s not about you, it’s about them.’ Although it is your life, the decisions and choices you make are not about you in the long run. It is essential to think about how what you’re doing will affect everyone else in your life before it affects you. This is a difficult tactic to master, but once started, the benefits are enormous. You will begin to see how beautiful the world really is when you’re living for more than just yourself.” – Kelsey Schneider ’16
“Of all the rules for success, I believe my top five would be: always be kind and respectful, learn from your failures, never compromise your integrity, never assume, and build and manage your relationships. My mom always taught me to respect everyone, even if they are not respectful toward you, so this concept really hit home.” – Carlee Jones ’16
“Lessons learned:
Show up; it accounts for 50 percent of your success.
One has to adapt and accept change; it creates opportunities.
Never, ever, compromise your integrity; it is the greatest gift God has given you.” – Kristi Guritza ’16
“I had the pleasure this week of attending the dinner with John Barr. We spoke about many things over the meal. He asked us all what we felt the best part of this class was and shared with us why he loves getting to come back so much. He stressed the extreme importance of giving back to Thiel once we graduate.” – Courtney Gibson ’16
“When Mr. Barr began his presentation right off the bat he gave us this quote, ‘talent is great, tenacity is greater.’ This stood out to me because tenacity is a big reason for who I am today.” – Paige Bennett ’16

The advertising classes of Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Accounting Karen Shaffer, M.B.A., are working with Greenville-area businesses. The local business owners and managers are teamed with students newly trained on creating advertising copy and using various online advertising techniques. This interdisciplinary class benefits from strong writers, international students, web designers, political science and business perspectives, according to Shaffer.
The month-long project began March 1. Six businesses shared previous collateral and current advertising goals. On March 31, the students will present marketing materials and suggested strategies for the businesses.
